Romance On The River At The Herrington Inn And Spa In Geneva, Illinois

March 6th, 2020

Every few years or so, my husband and I escape for a weekend getaway to a romantic hotel that captures the essence of a European chateau. However, we need not leave the country or the Chicago suburbs for that matter to enjoy our enchanting excursion. We revisit one of our favorite resorts located in Geneva, Illinois, elegantly known as the Herrington Inn and Spa.

The Herrington is situated on the banks of the Fox River and just a stone’s throw from its rolling waters. The brick façade is reminiscent of a rustic countryside cottage complete with dormered windows, French doors, waterfront verandahs, and lush landscaping. We are soon transported to an era gone by upon entering the lobby where we admire the grand staircase, rich cherry woods, and classic crown moldings.

I just adore the rooms at the Herrington where every detail is aimed at pleasing the guests from the heated marble floors and fireplaces to the canopy beds and plush robes and slippers. Comfortable sitting areas and waterside balconies complete with wicker furnishings are warm and welcoming. And my husband looks forward to the turndown service with fresh baked cookies and ice cold milk as well as a morning shoeshine and the ever-important wireless internet service. Rooms at the Herrington Inn and Spa have unmatched views of Geneva’s historical riverfront scenery and start at around $225 per evening. Moreover, you get a medical spa in NJ that is equally good. As it might not be possible for you to go to Illinois for this, this is where you can try this medicinal spa that will help you in keeping your mind and body relaxed.

For dinner, we eat right on-site at the riverfront restaurant, Atwaters, which features gourmet dining created by an accomplished chef and cookbook author. American style breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and even afternoon teas are served in the silo shaped structure with floor to ceiling French windows. A smaller gazebo building at the water’s edge is available for private luncheons, intimate business meetings or romantic dinners by candlelight.

In the warmer months, we pack our rollerblades and cross the river over to the Fox Valley Nature Trail. The sprawling riverside pathway runs for miles and is perfect for fresh air exercise and picturesque exploration. Expansive paved trails and bridges weave in and out of the riverside where activities range from fishing, canoeing, and kayaking to hiking, biking and even cross country skiing in the winter.

And if shopping is your “sport” of choice, fear not! Geneva, Illinois is home to over 200 gift shops, boutiques, bakeries, cafes, and eateries. From antique malls and toy stores to clothing shops, Christmas stores and art galleries, Geneva’s diversity offers something for everyone. My favorite is the Little Traveler, a Victorian home consisting of a café with lunchtime fashion shows, a candy shop, clothing stores, housewares, candies, coffees, garden items, collectibles, fine jewelry and more.

Located at 15 South River Lane, the Herrington Inn and Spa is only an hour from the hustle and bustle of Chicago’s lakeside Loop but provides the feel of a rural European hideaway perched upon a robust waterway.
